What makes a video a Short
YouTube decides Short status from the video itself: a vertical or square aspect ratio and a duration of three minutes or less. There is no separate upload type, endpoint, or checkbox — the same upload becomes a Short automatically when it meets those criteria.
That means the vertical videos you already repost to TikTok and Instagram Reels are Shorts-ready as-is: queue the same file to YouTube and it lands in the Shorts feed.

Upload limits
